Coaches - lets train you on how to be a great coach

  • Be tactful, consider your candidate and their nerves when you summarise their interview.

  • Provide positive comments but tell them where they could improve as well

  • Think about the job they are applying to - if you don't know then ask them.  Think about what the employer will be looking for and advise them to use examples that showcase the competencies of the job.

  • Advise them to research the company, the history, values and even management

  • Ensure they have a lot of examples to help with the behavioural questions.  This shows they actually have the experience, rather than just saying what they think an interviewer wants to hear.

  • Candidates should remain positive about any issues, challenges or negative experience they may have had with a previous employer.  They should focus on what they learned and look foward.

  • Applicants should always ask their interviewers questions at the end or when they can.  It shows a genuine interest in the company and its future.

Choosing your coach

When you choose your interview coach, you should think about someone you trust, that will give solid and helpful advice and has some idea about what an employer may look for.  This could be a family member, a careers advisor, a teacher, an old employer or colleague or someone else you trust.
